IASTM Massage Tool - Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation
What is IASTM?
IASTM is a manual therapy approach to musculoskeletal injuries using specifically designed tools. It’s basically a tool to help me get to the issue and work it better. IASTM - Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation, may also be called ASTYM or Graston.
Why do we use them?
If you've had a treatment with me you'll know I'm a big fan of my massage tools and use them in pretty much every treatment. Why? Because:
IASTM introduces a new stimuli to the nervous system, drawing attention to the area through friction and taking the focus away from the pain
It deliberately creates microtrauma to facilitate healing
The reduction in pain creates change in muscle tone/a reduction in tension and can improve range of movement
It's potentially releasing soft tissue adhesions and fascial restrictions
IASTM can help desensitise the tissue
